In 19th-century France, Emma Bovary, a farmer’s daughter brought up in an elegant convent, marries a dull country doctor. Full of romantic aspirations and dreams of luxury, she soon throws herself into love affairs to escape boredom. Claude Chabrol’s adaptation of Gustave Flaubert’s novel offered Isabelle Huppert one of her best roles. It screened as part of the official selection of the first French Film Festival in 1992.
"A classical art movie saturated with Chabrol's dark romantic pessimism."
