A classic of French literature is reborn in present day Paris. Gaston Leroux’s cult novel, The Phantom of the Opera, published in 1910, has been adapted and directed by Alexandre Castagnetti into a daring blend of thriller, fantasy, and romance, set against the sumptuous backdrop of the Opéra Garnier.
Romain Duris plays an ambitious artistic director, while Deva Cassel, in her first leading role, portrays Anastasia, a young dancer whose life is forever changed after her encounter with the mysterious phantom, played by Julien De Saint-Jean.
This reinterpretation of the novel takes some liberties with a screenplay, co-written by Castagnetti and Camille Fontaine. The atmosphere, however, retains the elegance and dramatic tension of the original story.
Follows in the fine tradition of such classics The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo.
"Inspired by the Twilight saga ... this is unashamedly romantic."
