Astier’s reimagining of Arthur as a gruff, short-tempered womaniser with relatively progressive values and an occasional soft spot was a runaway success.
Although the TV series ended more than ten years ago, its popularity endures, mainly through common references, private jokes among fans, and Twitter gifs and reactions. None of the magic has worn off; now it’s back as a film franchise. The first instalment scored more than two million spectators in France and sell-out shows at the French Film Festival UK and the Second Chapter is about to be unleashed. Kaamelott is often described as France’s equivalent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, (and there are certain similarities).
