Chichester – Cinema at New Park

This talk will present the life and times of the French film actor, Jean Gabin (1904-1976).
It will discuss his defining films from the 1930s, including his works with Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné.
This is an opportunity to admire Gabin’s amazing work and appreciate how he became a symbol of France.
The talk and film clips will however also excavate a ‘counter-history’ of Gabin by focussing on his less well-known work for UK audiences in films such as ‘Un Singe en Hiver’ (with Belmondo), ‘La Traversée de Paris’, and the vengeance B-movie, ‘La Horse.’
For Gabin both the official filmography and the counter one represent a remarkable archive of French cinema.
Professor Hugo Frey is the author of several books on French cinema and culture, including his recent co-authored, ‘The Look of the 1960s’.
