December 4, 2023 @ 17:50

When Pierre Bonnard met Marthe de Méligny, he didn’t know this self-proclaimed aristocrat would become the cornerstone of his life and work.

Director Martin Provost charts the colourful relationship and collaboration spanning five decades between Pierre Bonnard, who was mentored by Claude Monet and nicknamed the “painter of happiness,” by his wife Marthe de Méligny. The latter, who was a self-proclaimed aristocrat, became the cornerstone of her husband’s life and work, appearing in
more than a third of his paintings. Bonnard, considered one of the greatest French artists of the 20th century, weaves Impressionism and Abstraction with bold colours amid the depiction of scenes of everyday life.
