Mounia Meddour’s first feature Papicha

Peccadillo Pictures have just released Mounia Meddour’s first feature, Papicha, which we think you’ll love. Set during the 1990s Algerian civil war it follows a university student who dreams of opening her own boutique for the women of Algeria. It’s available to stream online now.

Dir Mounia Meddour

The first feature from writer-director Mounia Meddour, Papicha, is set during the Algerian Civil War of the 1990s, also referred to as the Black Decade, and was inspired by real events. Nedjma (Lyna Khoudri, now in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch) is a university student during the Algerian Civil War whose passion is fashion design. Defying religious conservatism, she custom-makes dresses for her peers which are examples of individual expression. Meddour, whose husband, French genre filmmaker Xavier Gens, is one of the producers, is at her best when simply capturing the girls as they try to live their lives in a time of profound and sometimes violent transformation.

“Impressive debut feature about a free-spirited student.”
