A deserter disguises himself as a woman to escape the fields of battle during the First World War in veteran André Techiné’s new film, adapted from Fabrice Virgili and Daniele Voldman’s non-fiction book La garconne et l’assassin / The Flapper and the Killer. It is the story of Paul and Louise Grappe, a young couple living their golden years before the Great War breaks out. When Paul (Stranger By The Lake star Pierre Deladonchamps) is sent to the front he blows off his own finger to buy a reprieve. The night before he’s due back in the trench, he makes a run for it and, with a little help from his wife (Céline Sallette), reinvents himself as Suzanne. After the government offered a blanket amnesty for all deserters, he would go on to tell his story in a popular vaudeville review.
