The Hunchback of Notre-Dame | Notre-Dame de Paris (NC PG+)

This opulent French production is the second talkie version of Victor Hugo’s famous novel. Buried under mounds of latex, Anthony Quinn plays Hugo’s tragic protagonist. opposite Gina Lollobrigida as gypsy dancing girl Esmeralda, whose friendship with Quasimodo motivates the story. As in previous adaptations of the Hugo novel, the villain Frolio (Alain Cuny), originally a priest, is given a less controversial station in life: in this case, he is an alchemist rather than a man of the cloth. Adapted by Jean Aurenche and Jacques Prévert this is one of the more faithful renditions of the original novel, even retaining Hugo’s unhappy ending.

Cast Gina Lollobrigida, Anthony Quinn, Alain Cuny, Robert Hirsch

A raw pathos to Quinn’s portrayal of Quasimodo … genuinely moving. – French Films.org
