Messaoud is a nine-year-old
boy of Algerian descent living in Paris in the early Sixties.
When his mother falls ill, his father is forced to place him
with a host family. With the war in Algeria at a critical point
and anti-Algerian sentiment at its worst, his host mother Gisèle
fears for the little boy and hides his identity. Messaoud becomes
Michel, blond and catholic. All is well until his secret is
revealed… The grandson of travelling poet Blaise Cendrars, writer/director Thomas Gilou makes documentaries and feature-films about cross-cultural identities. After depicting French-Africans in Black mic-mac (1986) and the French-Arabic community in Raï (1995), he portrayed the French-Jewish community in Would I Lie to You? (1997), a film which has become one of France’s biggest hits in the past 10 years. Michou d’Auber is based on the true story of Messaoud Hattou, who co-wrote the script. Two of French cinema’s biggest stars, Nathalie Baye and Gérard Depardieu, are reunited on screen as Michou’s foster parents. |
